One of the most attractive regions in Iran

Northern Iran includes the Southern Caspian regions representing provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan of Iran.

The major provinces, Gilan and Mazandaran, are covered with dense forests, snow-covered mountains and impressive sea shores. The major cities are Amol, Babol, Anzali, Rasht, Chalus, and Sari. Northern Iran has got numerous villages, particularly Masuoleh, appreciated by travellers. Today, it’s mostly visited by domestic tourists.

Three beautiful zones in three provinces

1. Ramsar is the western most county and city in Mazandaran. It borders the Caspian Sea to the north. Ramsar is a popular sea resort for Iranian tourists. The town also offers hot springs, the green forests of the Alborz Mountains and the vacation palace of the last Shah, which is currently the Ramsar Hotel. Twenty-seven kilometres south of Ramsar and 2700 meters above sea level in the Alborz mountains is Javaher-deh village, which is an important tourist attraction in Ramsar County.

2. Bandar-e Anzali (Anzali Port) is a harbour town ("Bandar" means "port") on the Caspian Sea, close to Rasht in Gilan. It is one of the most important seaports in the north of Iran. It consists of an island called Mianposhteh and the surrounding lands. The Anzali Lagoon divides the Anzali Port in two parts. The town is connected by two bridges to the Beheshti Island. Tourbebar is a beautiful village about 40 kilometres from Bandar-e Anzali, near the Anzali Lagoon.

3. The Miankaleh Biosphere Reserve is located at the south-eastern part of the Caspian Sea in Golestan province. Major habitats include wetlands, inter-tidal mud with sandy shore, shallow marine waters, forested peat lands, raspberry shrub forests, tamaris forests and agricultural areas.

Miankaleh was designated a Ramsar site in 1975. About 109,200 Turkmen and Iranians live in the biosphere reserve on a seasonal basis (2000). Their main sources of income come from agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, carpet weaving, traditional poultry farming and tourism.
